fluid module

Description

FEBio’s fluid module provides a nonlinear finite element framework for modeling viscous fluid flow independent of solid mechanics coupling. It supports large deformations and transient analyses within a consistent continuum mechanics formulation.

Core fluid mechanics capabilities include:

  • Incompressible and compressible fluid formulations.
  • Navier–Stokes equations solved in an updated Lagrangian framework.
  • Newtonian and selected non-Newtonian viscosity models.
  • Transient and steady-state flow analysis.
  • Stabilized finite element methods for convection-dominated flows.
  • Boundary conditions for velocity, pressure, traction, and prescribed flow rate.

These features enable simulation of internal viscous flows such as blood or other biological fluids where standalone fluid dynamics modeling is required.
