fluid-FSI module

Description

FEBio’s fluid-FSI module provides a fully coupled fluid–structure interaction framework for simulating the interaction between viscous fluids and deformable solids under large deformations.

Core capabilities include:

  • Monolithic (fully coupled) solution of the Navier–Stokes equations with nonlinear solid mechanics.
  • Large-deformation kinematics for both fluid and solid domains.
  • Incompressible and compressible fluid formulations.
  • Hyperelastic, viscoelastic, and other nonlinear solid material models.
  • Consistent traction and kinematic continuity across fluid–solid interfaces.
  • Transient analysis for strongly coupled dynamic problems.
  • Stabilized finite element formulations for convection-dominated fluid flow.
  • Boundary conditions for fluid velocity, pressure, flow rate, and solid displacement or traction.

These capabilities enable simulation of problems such as blood flow in deformable vessels, heart valve mechanics, and other biomechanical systems where fluid motion and structural deformation are tightly coupled.
